What Are Microgreens?

Microgreens are young vegetable greens that grow within 7 to 14 days. They’re small in size but packed with nutrients, making them a superfood. They’re used in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and high-end restaurants.

Why is microgreens farming a great business?

They grow super fast

– Harvest in just 1 to 2 weeks.

High demand

– Used in restaurants, organic markets, and fitness communities.

Requires little space

– You can grow microgreens in a small room or on a shelf.

Low investment, high profit

– A single tray can earn you $5 to $10 in profit.

Now, let’s go step by step on how to start your own microgreens business!

What You Need to Start

 Initial Investment: $40 to $250

Supplies Needed

Seeds

– Buy high-quality, non-GMO seeds ($10 to $40 for bulk).

Growing Trays

– Shallow trays without drainage holes ($5 to $15).

Soil or Coconut Coir

– Lightweight, nutrient-rich growing medium ($5).

Grow Lights

– If growing indoors, use LED grow lights ($25 to $70).

Spray Bottle & Watering Can

– For gentle watering ($3).

Once you have these, let’s start planting!

Step-by-Step Guide to Growing Microgreens

Step 1: Soak & Prepare the Seeds

Some seeds like peas and sunflowers need to be soaked overnight before planting.
Other seeds like broccoli, radish, and mustard can be planted directly.

Step 2: Prepare the Growing Tray

Fill the tray with 1 inch of soil or coconut coir.
Spread the seeds evenly across the tray – no need to bury them!
Press lightly so they make good contact with the soil.

Step 3: Water & Cover for Germination

Spray water lightly (do not overwater).
Cover with another tray to block light (helps in strong root growth).
Keep in a dark place for 3 to 4 days.

Step 4: Uncover & Provide Light

Once seeds sprout, remove the cover and place them under natural or LED lights.
Water twice a day (morning & evening).

Step 5: Harvest in 7 to 14 Days

Cut just above the soil using a sharp knife or scissors.
Rinse, pack, and store in an airtight container.
That’s it! You just grew your first batch of microgreens! Now let’s talk about where to sell them for maximum profit.
