Ratios

A ratio is a way to compare two or more quantities. It is a way of expressing one quantity in relation to another. A ratio can be written in different ways, but the most common way is using the colon sign (:). For example, a ratio of 3:5 means that there are 3 parts of one thing and 5 parts of another thing.

For example, if a recipe calls for 3 cups of flour and 1 cup of sugar, the ratio of flour to sugar is 3:1. This means that for every 3 cups of flour, there is 1 cup of sugar.

Another example would be in a class of 24 students, 12 are girls and 12 are boys, the ratio of girls to boys is 12:12 which simplifies to 1:1.

Ratios can be simplified by dividing both sides by the greatest common factor, for example, the ratio 6:9 simplifies to 2:3

Ratios can also be expressed as fractions, for example, the ratio 3:5 can be written as 3/5.

Ratios can be used in many fields such as cooking, engineering, finance, etc. Understanding ratios and how to work with them is an important math skill that can be applied in many areas of life.
