The Loyal Mongoose

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a poor Brahmin and his wife. They had a baby boy whom they loved dearly. To protect their child, they decided to keep a mongoose as a pet.

The mongoose was loyal, affectionate, and protective towards the baby.

One day, the Brahmin had to leave for work, and his wife went to fetch water from the river. Before leaving, she hesitated, worrying about leaving the baby alone with the mongoose. However, her husband reassured her, saying:

"The mongoose loves our child and will protect him like a brother."

Still, the mother was a little doubtful but left in a hurry.

While the mother was away, a dangerous cobra slithered into the house.

Seeing the cobra approaching the baby’s crib, the mongoose immediately attacked the snake

A fierce fight ensued, and after a struggle, the mongoose finally killed the snake.

Its mouth and paws were covered in blood, but it was proud to have saved the baby. It waited happily for the mother to return.

When the mother returned, the mongoose ran up to her with excitement. But when she saw blood on its mouth and paws, she panicked.

"Oh no! The mongoose has killed my baby!"

In a fit of rage and sorrow, without thinking, she picked up a heavy pot and struck the mongoose, killing it instantly.

As she rushed inside, she saw her baby sleeping peacefully—unharmed. Nearby, the lifeless body of the cobra lay on the floor. The mother realized her terrible mistake.

She broke down in tears, mourning the loss of the loyal mongoose who had only wanted to protect her child.

Moral of the story: Think before you act—hasty decisions lead to regret.
