An expression
is a combination of numbers, variables, and mathematical operations (such as +, -, x, / ). For example, 3x + 2, 7y - 5, and (2 + 3) / 4 are all examples of expressions. Expressions do not have a single value, as the value of an expression depends on the value of the variables in it.An equation
is a statement that two expressions are equal. For example, 3x + 2 = 7y - 5 and (2 + 3) / 4 = 1 are equations. Equations can be solved, which means finding the value(s) of the variable(s) that make the equation true. For example, if we want to solve the equation 3x + 2 = 7y - 5, we could start by isolating the variable on one side of the equation. To do this we can subtract 2 from both sides and get 3x = 7y - 7, then we can divide both sides by 3 and get x=y-7/3.An equation can have one or more solution depending on the type of equation it is, such as linear or quadratic equation.
A linear equation has one solution, while a quadratic equation has two solutions. An equation can also have no solution, which means that there are no values of the variable(s) that can make the equation true.
Equations and expressions are used in many areas of mathematics, such as algebra, calculus, and physics, as well as in many real-world applications such as engineering, economics, and computer science.
