Factors are numbers that can be multiplied together to give another number. Every number has a set of factors that are unique to it. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

Every number has two types of factors, prime factors and composite factors. A prime factor is a factor that is a prime number. A composite factor is a factor that is not a prime number.

You can find the factors of a number in several ways:

1) by listing out all the numbers that divide the number without leaving a remainder
2) by using a factor tree, which is a method that breaks down a number into its prime factors
3) by using division method, where you divide the number by numbers starting from 2 until you reach the number itself and checking which numbers give a remainder of 0.

For example, to find the factors of 24, you can:

1) list out all the numbers that divide 24 without leaving a remainder: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
2) use a factor tree: 24 = 2 x 12 = 2 x 2 x 6 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
3) use division method: 24 ÷ 2 = 12, 24 ÷ 3 = 8, 24 ÷ 4 = 6, 24 ÷ 6 = 4, 24 ÷ 8 = 3, 24 ÷ 12 = 2, 24 ÷ 24 = 1

Knowing the factors of a number can be useful in many mathematical operations and solving problems. For example, to find the greatest common factor (GCF) of two or more numbers, you need to find the common factors among those numbers.

Additionally, finding the least common multiple (LCM) of two or more numbers, involves finding the multiple of each number that is common to all of them.

Knowing factors of a number also helps you in simplifying fractions, solving algebraic equations, and understanding divisibility rules.
