Probability

is a measure of the likelihood of an event happening. It is a number between 0 and 1, with 0 indicating that an event is impossible and 1 indicating that an event is certain.

There are two main ways to calculate probability:
  • Classical probability

: This method is used when all outcomes of an experiment are equally likely. For example, if you flip a fair coin, the probability of getting heads or tails is 0.5 or 50%.

  • Empirical probability

: This method is used when the outcomes of an experiment are based on past data or observations. For example, if you flip a coin 100 times and get heads 60 times and tails 40 times, the probability of getting heads is 0.6 or 60%.

Probability is often represented as a decimal or a fraction. For example, the probability of getting heads when flipping a fair coin is 0.5 or 1/2.

Probability is also used to determine the likelihood of multiple events happening together. The probability of two independent events happening together is found by multiplying their individual probabilities. For example, the probability of getting heads on a coin flip and drawing a heart from a deck of cards is (1/2) * (1/4) = 1/8.

Probability is used in many fields such as statistics, finance, engineering, and science to make predictions, take decisions and understand the chances of certain outcomes.

Probability is also used to calculate expected values and standard deviations which are important in decision making and risk analysis.
