Subtracting Two Digit Numbers

Subtracting two-digit numbers is similar to what we just talked about. It's like taking away a certain number from a bigger number.

For example, let's say we want to subtract 29 from 57. We will line them up just like before, but this time we are taking away the smaller number from the bigger number.

Now, we will start by subtracting the ones, which are the last digits of the numbers, 7 and 9. So 7 - 9 = -2 (result is negative because 7 is smaller than 9) But we can't have negative numbers in subtraction, so we borrow 1 from the tens digit and add 10 to the units digit. So 7 becomes 17, and now we have 17-9 = 8. So we write 8 under the line.

Next, we will move on to the tens, which are the middle digits of the numbers, 4 and 2. So 4 - 2 = 2. And we write 2 in front of the 8, like this:

  28

And that's it! We have subtracted the two-digit number 29 from 57 and got the answer 28.

Just like before, if the subtrahend (the number being subtracted) is larger than the minuend (the number from which we are subtracting), we have to borrow from the next digit to make subtraction possible.

Negative Results

Subtracting two-digit numbers will result in a negative number if the number being subtracted (subtrahend) is larger than the number from which we are subtracting (minuend).

For example, let's say we want to subtract 29 from 15. We will line them up as if we are subtracting the smaller number from the larger number and then add negative sign to the result. So putting the numbers as below:

Now, we will start by subtracting the ones, which are the last digits of the numbers, 9 and 5. So 9 - 5 = 4

Next, we will move on to the tens, which are the middle digits of the numbers, 2 and 1. So 2 - 1 = 1

But as the original ask was to subtract 29 from 15, we add minus sign to the result so our result becomes -14. So

 -14

It's important to understand that a negative result in subtraction means that the subtrahend is larger than the minuend.
